About this grant

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) administers the Certified Local Government (CLG) program, which certifies local governments with sound historic preservation programs and makes them eligible for competitive matching grants funded by a 10% set-aside of federal Historic Preservation Funds. CLG grants support architectural and archaeological surveys, National Register nominations, heritage stewardship planning, public education, training, and rehabilitation of National Register-listed buildings. The FY 2026-2027 CLG grant round is currently open through DHR's WebGrants portal.

Eligibility details

  • Notes: Only local governments (towns, cities, and counties) that have been designated as Certified Local Governments (CLGs) by DHR may apply for CLG grants. To obtain CLG designation, a local government must adopt a historic district ordinance, maintain an active preservation review board, continue surveying local heritage resources, promote public participation, and report annually on CLG responsibilities. The CLG grant process is competitive and open only to CLGs.
